Mutiny Magazine

Columns:  Wench Whisperer, Pirate Envy, The Newgate Gentlemen's Club

Feature:  The Bearings of L'Ollonais

In addition to columns, features and editing chores, Mutiny Magazine required me to attend, photograph and review events and festivals, write contributor's bios, manage and update the Mutiny News blog, act as "Captain" of Issue #3. provide most of the 'A' elements for our website's 'Q and A' section and create a moderately epic description of the Round Robin

The Round Robin: a written declaration of dissent, signed in a circle to render no name more prominent than any other, thus concealing the identity of its instigator or "ringleader" and delivered to a ship's captain as a preamble to sedition. More than the simple grumblings of malcontented sailors, the Round Robin was a dread portent of insurrection, the first-fired salvo of Mutiny. . .

A Shot of Mutiny

Ahoy there, rogues of refined literary sensibilities! This be Bullet writing to you for my first time as dictatorcaptain of an entire issue of Mutiny. Aye, and the power has corrupted me completely.

While Talderoy got our Mutiny ship afloat -typosleaks and all- with Issue #1 and Lycan pushed us out to sea in #2, I'll be steering Issue #3 full-sail through the Straits of Dire, navigating maelstromous storms and traversing unholy realms of Leviathan. So hold tight to that standing rigging, and try not to spill your rum cups.

In this tome of briny terror our cover-pirate, Louie Lambe, will share his tales of sea-faring tribulations, a skeleton pirate will speak, and Kendra will escape to some distant port of deep-sea adventure -though I hadn't been informed of exactly where by the time we went to press. So be surprised. I will.

Further; we'll get our Grognitive Dissonance on with the Tropically Impaired libations of Don Ron Brown, straight from the Bahamian Isles to your liver!

The rest of the Mutiny crew be aboard this voyage too, delivering paroxysms of piracy to quicken yer timbers and shiver yer members.

As well; when charity toward the plight of ignorant men may be rendered only by the most empathic and delicate expression of tactful sensitivity, one turns, naturally, to the Wench Whisperer. So chin-up, ye futile failureslonely of heart! The Whisperer returns herein!

Lastly; we'll visit that scoundrelly ward above the Felon's Quadrangle wherein assemble The Newgate Gentlemen's Club to hear the account of one highwayman's ascent from petty thievery to violent robbery to murder. We'll follow his misfortuned soul thru crimes, capture and, finally, along the the Dead Man's Road from Newgate Prison to Tyburn's Tree for a shallow drop and distressingly prolonged choking. Don't despair for him though. He'll go out with style.

So come aloft, brave travelers. Cross that splintered gangplank and clutch tightly to your coinage. The third voyage of Mutiny commences forthwith!

Godspeed and Rum's the Word.

The Buccaneers Ball

A first-time event, the Buccaneers Ball incited a fleet of thirsting cutthroats to sail and stagger into port at the Lake Arrowhead Ballroom to imbibe the seafaring soundage of There Be Pirates and Mr. Mac and the Mermaids. Adam the Juggler manipulated his balls in ways not seen since, well, ever as a female dance troupe incited the manipulation of other things. Barrels of rum were emptied into the attendees along with several flavors of Captain Sebastian's Private Reserve coffees which, alone, were worth making the long voyage. A buffet of breathtaking victuals was devoured posthaste by the uncivilized mariners and, for the second time, Talderoy was proclaimed Pirate of the Year which, of course, means that Talderoy has now been Pirate of the Year TWICE as many times as Tony Swatton! (Aye, plop that on yer anvil and hammer it, Tony). Much thanks to Randy McLaughlin and Allen Melloy for hosting this memorable evening.

The Portland Pirate Festival

Thanks to the hospitality of event promoter (and Mutiny Magazine contributor) Katherine Larsen, the Mutiny crew dropped anchor on the head of the Portland Pirate Festival recently and had a right rumderful time of it!  The flurry of fiddlers and the grog at Oberon's Tavern were high points of a splendid expedition. Pitchas? Video? Aye, it's all here and all incriminating...

About Mutiny Magazine - Q and A.

Herein: answers to those inquiries which most frequently deluge our inbox...

Why is the Round Robin your symbol?

We wanted something original, and the world really doesn't need yet another jolly roger in it, so we based our symbol on the round robin note -where mutineers signed their names in a circle to conceal the identity of their ringleader. Mutiny Magazine -like the round robin- is a note of dissent against a stale status quo. The history of piracy, much like the sea, is vast and still mostly unexplored yet many people insist on limiting themselves to "Arrrr matey" and "Dead men tell no tales" or whatever other uninspiring cliches have defined pirates for countless years. We felt a hunger within the pirate scene for more than what's been done before. Not to say we'll be completely original, just that originality is an ideal worth striving for, hence the Round Robin was the perfect emblem.

Who produces Mutiny Magazine?

We are a group of malcontented pirates banded together to do something different. Specifically; to mutiny against mediocre and cliche-ridden portrayals of piracy. When we get complacent we mutiny against ourselves, thus the different captain for each issue.

Why is it 18 plus only?

We felt there was quite enough kid-oriented pirate content out there already and adults needed something that wasn't limited to a G rating, hence this is not your kid's pirate magazine. Rather than casting a wide net trying to appeal to everyone -by watering down the content to make it inoffensive to anyone- we decided to focus on that untapped adult readership. After all; you're a child for just a few fleeting years and then you're an adult for the entire rest of your life...
